Keep the Horton General has always maintained that the second obstetric unit in Oxfordshire – at the Horton Maternity Hospital – was a very necessary way to share childbirths.
Prior to the downgrade to a midwife-only unit in 2016, the Horton Maternity Hospital used to take on overflow from the JR, Oxford, so mothers’ deliveries did not have to be ‘managed’ to suit the staffing situation.
As things are now, mothers are routinely facing birth trauma because of the ‘crush’ of deliveries the Oxford unit is trying to cope with.
